RMNP- Hike 2
We thought we would go to a short hike up near bear lake in the Rocky Mountains but don't let the pictures deceive you, it was not a warm sunny day. We started out early taking a shuttle bus up to Bear lake. It took 15 minutes to get up the mountain. As we drove it got colder, wetter and by the time we got there it was raining and and 48 degrees. We did not have proper attire. So we shuttled back down and found another trail to do for the day. Frustrated and getting closer to lunch we were not sure how hard to push the kids. Especially after the drama the day before (me included). As we made it back down the mountain it was a beautiful day for a hike and lunch by the river. We found a trail that had a parking lot located at the trailhead. This we have found is a very important piece of information. You do not want a parking lot that is .7 miles from the trailhead.
Fern lake trail is an awesome hike for a family fun outing. It is 1.5 to the falls and it goes along the river most of the way. We were greeted at the falls by chipmunks that wanted Evan's snack. They climbed right up on his lap and reached up to his mouth to get the trail mix bar. He loved it, Sean freaked out!
As we made our way back Sean fell asleep sitting on Daddy's shoulders, it started to mist and we got to the end of the trail with clean faces and smiles. We stopped at the river and made lunch with the food in the back of the van. It was one of the highlights of RMNP for me. We all got in the river. We splashed, threw rocks, took in our surroundings and didn't worry about the time of day. We were together and for those few moments that was more then enough.
